Is it just me, or is part of why I love Oregon the greenery? I grew up in a neighborhood in Portland that had large trees throughout. It was beautiful, peaceful and scenic. I spent some time in Eugene, which was even better. Driving down some of the near-downtown streets under a canopy of lush green trees is simply amazing. Now, I am surrounded by new construction. Phase one of new construction is to completely clearcut the property. Leave no stone unturned, no blade of grass standing and make sure all of those pesky trees are gone. When the developments are done, when viewed from above, the houses all appear stacked on top of each other. My parents neighborhood, on the other hand, the houses appear well spaced, even though they’re not much further apart than the new construction areas. Their neighborhood personifies what is great about Oregon. New construction, with their energy efficient windows, furnaces and appliances have taken a step backwards by destroying the nature around them. Is it really so hard to build around a few trees? Am I alone on this one?
