Virtual Open Houses Around the Corner?

by Nick Bostic on September 27, 2007

iRobot (maker of the various Roomba’s, Scooba, Dirt Dog and Verro) have just announced two new products. One is the Looj which is a gutter cleaning robot. I like the idea, but I have high ceilings and two stories, and I still have to climb the ladder to put it in place, so that’s not of much interest to me.ConnectR

They also announced the ConnectR, the “Virtual Visiting Robot”. It is remotely operated from a web site, has built in VoIP for two-way communication, and has two cameras. The concept is to keep in touch with your family while away on business or to keep an eye on the house while on vacation.

But why not use it to conduct virtual open houses any time your potential buyers want?

It’s not out yet, so I’m not sure if it’s entirely possible, but why not setup a web site where people can login and control the ConnectR? They can drive it around the house, get an idea for the look and feel and you don’t have to be there. The problems, of course, include multiple robots for multiple floors of the house and lighting situations, but there are relatively easy ways around both of these.

We’ll see where these go when they come out…
