Creativity – Invention or Innovation?

by Nick Bostic on October 15, 2007

My job and my personal life force me to be creative. Be it the marketing pieces or classes I put together in the office or the photographs and web sites I put together at home, I am always trying to be different. I keep tabs on a bunch of different email newsletters, web sites and blogs to keep “in the loop”. I always try to synthesize the things I read instead of just direct quotations.

They say imitation is the purest form of flattery, but I have to admit I was a bit annoyed to discover that a local company in the same line of business directly ripped off my ideas. They took the picture of Portland (which used to be on this site, not the current one although I wouldn’t be surprised to see it get ripped off too), found another one taken about 2 steps to the left and put it all over their marketing materials. One of their employees even put it on their blog.

I guess the part that bothers me is aside from stepping to the left 3 feet to take the picture, it’s identical to what I’ve chosen for our company. Ours was a major “refresh” of some pretty dated marketing materials, then to have some unimaginative person come along and copy it, when there are literally hundreds of great photos of our fair city, it raises the fur a little bit.

So you may see my header image change from time to time as I rotate the pictures so as to not look identical to someone who is not creative. It might give me a bad name.
