NAR Expo: Day 0.5

by Nick Bostic on November 12, 2007

So I’m still on the ground in Portland, waiting for out plane situation to get figured out. While I was waiting, I decided to catch up on the latest from Google, the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) and their new mobile software platform Android. They launched their SDK (Software Development Kit) today, so it only makes sense for me to look at it.

While some may think this is going to be especially revolutionary for the Real Estate Industry, in our neck of the woods, we’re still going to be hindered by RMLS. They have mentioned plans to support alternative browsers such as Firefox with Safari down the road, so if the browser on this new Android platform runs closely enough to Firefox (or the new Mozilla Mobile that has been mentioned), this may be helpful for Realtors.

If the timing doesn’t coincide, however, you’re into the same problems I mentioned with the iPhone. You need email, and even a basic phone will let you access that. You want (don’t need) eKey, which only certain Treo and Windows Mobile phones give you. You need a decent camera and virtually no cell phones give you that. Which I why I say time and again in my classes that a BlackBerry is best for your business (it has the best email by far), but if you’d rather prioritize combining your personal life items into one, your options are limitless.

If you’re a nerd like me and want to see this new Google OHA Software as it evolves, check it out here.
