So the other day, I was contacted by a person who is an alternative medicine practitioner. This person told me their site was underperforming and really wanted to boost it into overdrive. I told them I’d take a look at get back to them.
No
I realized after reading their site that I probably would not be able to help them. They had mixed a lot of politics into their business site. I told the person that the only way I could help them if they separated their politics from their business.
Jeez Nick, Who Cares?
Even though I agreed with this person on most of their issues, they were very…blunt (a very nice word). The problem is they named names and discussed issues in a way that could be a bit combative. That’s fine for them to do, I respect them for taking a stance, but when I take on a client, my name is attached to their project.
My Choice
Ultimately, it’s my choice who I take on as a client. Not only do I want to reflect well on you, but I want you to reflect well on me and my future clients. I was also raised with the concept of not mixing politics/religion into business, which I am still sticking to.
It doesn’t mean I don’t like you and wouldn’t want to grab a drink with you, I just can’t take your money.

I feel the same way about taking on new clients. I also don't post my prices so that when those difficult to manage clients come around, I'm not pigeon-holed into charging the same rates for something that could potentially be twice the work.
I'm definitely coming back here. That was good stuff.
