My Self-Imposed Twitter Intervention

by Nick Bostic on January 22, 2009

So I just announced I’m going to be using Twitter a bit differently:

twitter1 My Self Imposed Twitter InterventionGoogle Talk, Skype and other tools are for chatting.

Since someone will probably ask, here’s my current FAQ:

Q: Why are you still pushing your blog posts out to Twitter?
A: It is “what I’m doing”.  Since I can’t really share it with you while I’m writing it, you get it just as soon as it’s done. So it may be more like “what I did” instead of “what I’m doing”, but I think it’s good enough for me.

Q: If you’re supposedly only saying what you’re doing and want chats taken elsewhere, why are you still using @ replies and DM’s?
A: I’m polite. If you want to talk to me, respond, chat or what-have-you on Twitter, I will respond. But if it’s going to be much more than a couple of messages, let’s take it elsewhere, or maybe stick to DM’s that way they’re not flooding everyone else’s timeline.

Nick. I'm with you. This is the result that has naturally ocurred in my use of Twitter in the past few months. I just don't have the time to sit on Twitter. I do think the conversations muddy the waters for many and while I do enjoy some of the interacting, I think my involvement had to change too.

I understand if you are having a personal conversation the need to take it "offline" into one of the other forums. BUT, some of the coolest things I learn about people are things that are said "in conversation" while on Twitter. I don't feel people having conversations in the Twitterstream muddies it up. There are countless friends I have met there as a result of people "chatting". My 2 cents… ;?)

I will admit I learn a ton on Twitter as well, although much less than I used to. Links that are shared have RSS feeds and when I notice I visit a site more than once, I usually subscribe, so I get the news elsewhere that requires far less of my concentration. I too have met quite a few friends via the twitterstream, but right now I'm feeling like I don't have the time between the day job, the various side projects and planning all of the summer events that I have the time to just sit on Twitter all day looking for the next insightful thought when the vast majority is very repetitive. My $0.02 as well :)
