Blockbuster "Sale"

by Nick Bostic on March 18, 2009

I’ve been a Blockbuster movies by mail customer for a couple of years now. I had preferred it to Netflix because I could walk my two movies to the nearby Blockbuster location and just trade them in and they would immediately send me two more in the mail, frequently giving me four at a time with an absurdly long period to return the store movies with a minimal “restocking” fee.  Well, the time period to return movies has decreased (and I was never told) and now they’re not sending me movies when I trade them in at the store, so now I’m going from a minimum of two at a time to periods when I’ll have zero.  Needless to say, I’ll be cancelling as soon as I download my queue and switching to Netflix to support the local economy (we have a customer service center very nearby).

However, during my last trade in (before I was told repeatedly by the girl behind the counter that the new policies were MUCH BETTER only to have her finally relent and add FOR BLOCKBUSTER), I saw in the checkout line a wonderful sale.  I snapped some pictures to share the value with you:

SALE! 5 for $5 or $1 each! That’s a great SALE!  But I wonder what the deal was before they covered it with cheap neon pink copy paper…

blockbuster2

Wait a second! Originally it was 2 for $1 (or $0.50 each for the math disinclined).  So the “Sale” is actually twice the price?  Not much of a “sale” then, is it?

There’s been plenty of rumors (apparently untrue) of Blockbuster filing for bankruptcy. I typically don’t wish ill-will towards anyone, but I would be very content if Blockbuster existed no more.

Good investigative reporting! Worthy of John Stossel or perhaps Geraldo Rivera…
